Dr. Ajay Goyal is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and Associate Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey.
To ensure the best patient care and weight loss success, he employs a multi-disciplinary team, including nutritional, psychological and physical therapy counseling. His team includes registered dietician Karen Kelly, licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Alison Morgan, and Stephen Kelly, MPT, Director of IVY REHAB Physical Therapy.
Dr. Goyal’s medical weight loss team helps patients during the
evaluation of the medical condition, and supports nutritional and
lifestyle needs of patients after surgery.
Surgery options
Lap Band
Lap band surgery is the least invasive surgery. It is also
reversible. This procedure works by reducing the stomach size,
thus limiting the food intake. There is no change to the
digestive process, thus normal absorption of nutrients from food
is not affected.
Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass surgery alters the digestive process in addition to restricting the stomach size. The goal with this procedure is to limit absorption of calories from food, in addition to limiting food intake at one time. Absorption of nutrients is affected, so patients must take vitamin supplements for the rest of their life with the gastric bypass procedure.
