Is weight loss surgery right for me?

You must be over the age of 18 to be eligible for weight loss surgery.

If you’re considering surgery the first question to ask yourself is , "Do I have clinically severe obesity?" or "morbid obesity"? Your obesity is likely to be considered clinically severe if:

  1. You weigh more than 100 pounds over your ideal body weight.

  2. You have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40. (Try BMI Calculator)

  3. You have a BMI of over 35 and are experiencing severe health related conditions , such as high blood pressure or diabetes, related to being severely overweight.

If you have tried other medically managed weight loss programs and still are far from achieving your ideal body weight, then surgery may be an option for you.

Weight loss surgery can help you sustain weight loss. However, you must demonstrate serious motivation and a clear understanding of the extensive dietary, exercise and medical guidelines that must be followed for the rest of your life after having weight loss surgery.

It’s also important to have the support of your family to keep you motivated and committed to the essential lifestyle changes after the surgery.
